so whats lightworks good for? as a full-featured professional editor, it is difficult to argue against. for the beginner or someone looking for a simple video editor, lightworks isnt a good option. however, if you are an intermediate editor looking to advance your skills, lightworks is a superb application for you. there are better free video editors available, but lightworks has the tools and interface to compete with the best of the best.

with that said, i still strongly recommend lightworks for beginners, and its tools and interface are easy to pick up. as a full-featured professional editor, you cant go wrong with lightworks. with that said, there are other, more streamlined options available for free. i wouldnt recommend them to beginners, but there is a section later in this tutorial that covers some of them.
when installing the lightworks installer, make sure that you select the custom installation option instead of the default "installers pre-made distribution." this will give you access to the lightworks installer's modify features, which are needed to change the default settings. if you want to modify the default settings after the install, you can simply run the install program again and select the default options.
if you are using windows, you have to manually install the lightworks 2020 program. there is no installer available on the publisher website. instead, you will need to download the zip archive, extract it, and run the "setup.exe" file.
a great way to check if your computer is ready for lightworks is to download its trial version. this gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with lightworks, and get a feel for how it works. the trial version also gives you a chance to try the software without having to install it.
